Why Aerospace Orders Fail

The Problems We're Built to Prevent

Commercial machine shops rarely understand aerospace documentation requirements or MIL-SPEC finish standards. These are the failure modes that result.

Material Traceability

Generic material sourcing fails aerospace receiving inspection.

Aerospace programs require AMS-specification material certifications and full Certificates of Conformance for every part. A supplier who sources to commercial grade — not AMS — creates traceability gaps that fail audits and delay program schedules.

We source to AMS specifications and provide MTRs, CoCs, and FAI reports on every aerospace order.
MIL-SPEC Surface Finishes

Standard commercial anodize doesn't meet MIL-A-8625 requirements.

MIL-A-8625 Type II and Type III specify precise coating thickness, alloy class, and seal requirements that commercial anodize shops routinely miss. Wrong finish type — even on the correct material — causes rejection at receiving inspection and requires full rework.

DFM review specifies the correct MIL-SPEC finish, alloy type, and coating thickness range before production begins.
Thin-Wall Distortion

Lightweighting requirements push wall thicknesses to the edge of machinability.

Aerospace parts optimised for weight often have 0.5–1mm walls that distort during machining, causing tolerance stack-up in the final assembly. Shops that machine without the right fixturing strategy deliver parts that are in-spec on the machine and out-of-spec in the assembly.

We flag thin-wall geometry, recommend fixturing strategy, and sequence machining operations to minimise distortion during DFM.

Our Process

How an Aerospace Order Works at Factorem

From STEP file to delivered part — with aerospace-specific engineering review and full documentation at every stage.

1

Upload STEP File + Drawing

STEP, IGES, or 2D drawing accepted. Include material specification (AMS grade), surface finish callouts, and any assembly context. Quote returned within 24–48 hours. NDA available on request.

2

Engineering DFM — Aerospace-Specific Review

Your engineer reviews AMS material specification, MIL-SPEC finish requirements, thin-wall fixturing strategy, and tolerance achievability — before a single chip is cut. Issues are flagged and resolved upfront.

Material certification review (AMS / ASTM)MIL-SPEC finish specificationThin-wall / fixturing strategy
3

Material + Finish Selection Confirmed

We confirm AMS alloy grade, MIL-SPEC finish type and thickness, and any special requirements before order confirmation. All specifications documented in the work order — no assumptions passed to the shop floor.

4

Manufacture + In-Process QC

3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining with in-process dimensional checks. CMM inspection on critical features. MIL-SPEC finish verified at source — coating thickness and alloy class confirmed before shipment.

5

Delivered with Full Aerospace Documentation

Material Test Report (MTR to AMS spec), Certificate of Conformance, dimensional inspection report, and surface finish certification ship with every order. 12-day standard lead time. First Article Inspection reports on request.

"Factorem's DFM review flagged a MIL-SPEC finish specification issue before we went to production — saving us a full rework cycle. The material documentation they provide passes our receiving inspection without any back-and-forth."
